If you don’t know what it is you want your users to achieve, how will you ever create a website usability strategy?
Identify the route your users should take through your website in an ideal world. Focus your efforts on making these routes as usable as possible. Where applicable, apply tracking tools to record users’ progress through these routes.
There are so many different ways of testing the usability of your website. From eye-tracking to questionnaires to focus groups or expert testers, each method offers a different insight into how your website is used. Choose the right testing methods for your project to make the greatest gains.
If your website is aimed at children, then always make sure your sample includes children of the appropriate age. If you are targeting sports fans, always test your site on sports fans. An unrepresentative sample will only cause you more pain in the future.
Just because your colleagues, friends or family tell you your website is usable, never assume that you know better than your test results. We all want our projects to work, and it’s not unnatural to want your project to work too. Your project will work always place test results over your personal feelings!
