Search engine definition

A search engine is a Web-based system designed to aid the navigation of the user to relevant, useful content.

A user will enter a query into the search engine and it will return a list of results that it feels best matches the user’s query. The search results and rankings are decided-upon by a collection of complex algorithms.

Search results returned can take the form of any type of Web content. More advanced online search engines allow the user to search by content type.

The current most popular and widely-used online search engine is Google.

Search Engine Optimisation is used by many websites to move its results higher up the returned results lists on relevant keywords or phrases.
