Most website owners give a lot of thought to their home page, making sure its welcoming and gives their users a great first impression.
Many also go to great lengths to consider the user journey, considering questions like "where do I want my visitors to go?" on the site and "what goals do I want to achieve?" filling out a contact form for example.
The problem is, in these days of social sharing it's no longer just about your home page.
People are arriving at your website from a multitude of places and they no longer all come through "the front door". While some still come via Google organic search, others may come from content which you or your users have shared on social media.
This means they could be arriving on your news page, your media gallery or your blog.
Recently when conducting website reviews with clients I have increasingly seen this become more common. With some sites, the home page is not even the most visited page on the site.
With this in mind it is important to keep an eye on your Google Analytics, check which pages people are landing on and to consider where you would like the user to go once they are on your site.
So many times when looking at Google Analytics, we see pages where visitors arrive at the site and exit without visiting any other pages. Typically when we investigate these pages we find that there is no clear "Call To Action" on the page and the user doesn't know where to go next.
This is not only a lost opportunity for your business it may also harm your search ranking as Google sees a high "Bounce Rate" as an indication of poor user experience.
Keep an eye on your Analytics to see which pages your users are landing on, if you are an Intergage customer and you are not sure how to do this ask your account manager to look into this for you.
Once you have a clear understanding of which pages your users are landing on you can have a clear plan of where you would like them to go and make sure that you make the most of the opportunity to create a great first impression.
A well set up Analytics profile is integral for this kind of analysis. Make sure you have filters applied to your account so your internal traffic is excluded - otherwise your activity on the site and possibly all your staff's will skew the data!
