At digital marketing agency Intergage, we were not surprised to hear that Google has recently predicted that 1 billion people will use a mobile phone as their primary tool to access the internet in 2012. Data from a Google –sponsored survey was recently unveiled by Jason Spero, Google’s head of mobile sales, at the Mobile World Congress event held in Barcelona. This data revealed that mobile search usage has now nearly 100% penetration among smartphone owners, who are typically using their phones to search the Web at least once a week.
The survey also revealed that smartphone owners are particularly avid social networking users and heavy video consumers but perhaps the most interesting finding is the fact that smartphones are now playing a central role in offline purchase decisions.
Google found that 92% of smartphone users in the US were using their mobiles to seek offline information about particular businesses and then a staggering 89% went on to perform some kind of action – be it a purchase, call to the business or physical visit to the business location. One of Google’s most powerful predictions for 2012 is that mobiles role in driving people into stores will be accurately proven – and it will blow us away!
